Freight, Duties & Fulfillment: A Founder’s Guide to Apparel Shipping Logistics

Shipping logistics rarely get attention until a brand’s first bulk order is ready to move — and by then, unplanned freight costs and duties can meaningfully cut into margin. Understanding the basics early avoids expensive surprises.

Air Freight vs. Sea Freight

Air freight is faster and better suited to smaller, time-sensitive orders, while sea freight is far cheaper per unit for larger volumes but takes considerably longer. Most growing brands eventually use a mix: sea freight for planned bulk stock, air for urgent reorders.

Understanding Duties and Tariffs

Import duties depend on your destination country, the garment’s material composition, and its classification code. Rates can vary significantly between similar-looking garments, so it’s worth confirming the correct classification with your freight forwarder before your first shipment, not after.

Planning Your Fulfillment Flow

  • Decide early whether you’ll fulfill orders yourself or use a third-party logistics (3PL) provider
  • Factor customs clearance time into your launch timeline, not just production time
  • Keep a buffer of safety stock for your best-selling sizes and styles
  • Build a relationship with one freight forwarder rather than shopping every shipment

None of this is glamorous work, but a brand that plans its logistics early ships on time — and a brand that ships on time keeps its customers.
