Jeans are a specific garment — pants — typically made from denim. The relationship is the same as “wool” and “sweater”: one describes a material, the other a finished product. Denim also shows up in jackets, skirts, and shirts, none of which are jeans.

This isn’t a purely academic distinction. A supplier conversation about “denim” is a fabric conversation — weight, weave, stretch content, finish — while a conversation about “jeans” is a garment conversation covering pattern, fit, and construction details like rivets and pocket bags. Mixing the two up in a brief is a fast way to get a quote or sample that answers the wrong question.

Where the Confusion Comes From

Jeans are such a dominant use of denim that the fabric name and the garment have effectively merged in everyday conversation. That’s harmless in casual speech, but it becomes a real problem in a spec sheet or a supplier conversation, where “denim” and “jeans” aren’t interchangeable terms — one is a material request, the other isn’t a material request at all.

What Makes Denim, Denim

The defining structural feature is a twill weave — the weft yarn passes under two or more warp yarns, creating the diagonal rib pattern visible on the fabric surface. Traditional denim uses indigo-dyed warp yarns and undyed (or differently dyed) weft yarns, which is why denim fades unevenly along the diagonal weave line as the indigo wears from the surface — a characteristic look that a plain-dyed cotton twill won’t replicate the same way.

Raw Denim vs. Washed Denim

Raw (or dry) denim hasn’t been washed or treated after weaving and dyeing — it’s stiffer, holds its indigo color longer, and develops fade patterns unique to how it’s actually worn. Washed denim has been through one or more finishing washes to soften the hand-feel and set a fade pattern before the customer ever wears it. Neither is inherently “better” — they’re different positioning decisions with different customer expectations attached.

Denim Weight and Stretch Content

Like any fabric, denim is available across a weight range, generally described in ounces per square yard rather than GSM in most denim-specific supplier conversations — lighter weights suit shirting and warm-weather styles, heavier weights suit structured jackets and classic five-pocket jeans. Stretch denim blends a small percentage of elastane into the weave for recovery and comfort; the tradeoff is that stretch denim generally fades and ages differently than 100% cotton denim, which matters if a raw, naturally-faded aesthetic is part of the design intent.

Beyond Jeans: Other Uses for Denim

Denim jackets, skirts, shorts, overalls, and even accessories all use the same fabric category without being jeans at all. This matters practically: a brand developing a denim jacket is having a fabric conversation with its supplier, not a “jeans” conversation, and being precise about that from the first supplier email avoids a round of confused sampling.

Selvedge Denim: A Term Worth Knowing

Selvedge (or “self-edge”) denim is woven on older-style shuttle looms that produce a tightly finished fabric edge, which doesn’t unravel the way modern wide-loom denim can. It’s generally more expensive to produce and is often used as a signal of quality or craftsmanship, particularly in premium and heritage-positioned denim. Selvedge is a weaving-process distinction, not a weight or color distinction — it can appear across a range of denim weights, and it’s worth confirming with a supplier whether “selvedge” in their catalog means genuine shuttle-loom construction or simply a finished-edge trim detail.

Denim Finishing and Environmental Impact

Denim’s finishing processes — particularly washing and distressing treatments used to create a worn or faded look — vary widely in water and chemical use depending on the method and the supplier. Newer finishing techniques (laser distressing, ozone washing, and reduced-water processes among them) aim to lower that impact compared to traditional stone or chemical washing, but availability and actual performance differ by supplier and region, so it’s worth asking a specific factory what finishing methods they use rather than assuming any particular standard applies industry-wide.

Raw, unwashed denim sidesteps much of this finishing impact by definition, which is part of why some brands position raw denim as a more deliberate, lower-intervention product — though that’s a positioning choice tied to a specific finishing decision, not a claim about denim as a fabric category overall.

What This Means When You’re Briefing a Factory

When specifying denim, it’s worth being explicit about weight, stretch content, wash treatment (or raw/unwashed), and weave characteristics — not just naming “denim” and assuming a shared understanding. The word alone leaves too much open to interpretation, in the same way “cotton” alone doesn’t specify a weight or construction. Precision here is a small effort that prevents a sample coming back in a fabric that technically qualifies as denim but isn’t at all what was intended.

It’s also worth requesting a physical swatch before committing to a design built around a specific denim’s hand-feel or fade characteristics — indigo depth, weave texture, and stretch recovery all vary enough between suppliers that a written spec alone rarely tells the full story.

Denim is a fabric; jeans are a garment made from it.
